Gawith Hoggarth's Sliced Black RM Rum is produced by the age old method of hand spinning tobacco leaves into long ropes, also called twists. The twist tobacco is then sliced for your convenience and only needs to be rubbed gently before packing your pipe. Traditionally, twists were used as either a chewing tobacco, or were smoked in pipes that usually had small bowls. A popular choice for coal miners, where smoking was dangerous because it could cause explosions, a chunk of rope could be cut off and chewed. Once out of the mine, slices could be cut from the rope and rubbed into a pipe to be smoked.
Sliced Black RM Rum twist is cooked for longer than brown twists to give a milder smoke with a deeper smoky aroma. This is a pure Virginia of mainly dark fired leaves and a smaller amount of dark air-cured leaf. Rum has been added to give this tobacco a subtle extra flavouring that works well with the toasted nutty, slightly cigar-like flavours of the rope.
The dark slices of the original twist are apparent amongst the black ribbons, from coils that have come apart. It is easy to rub out further and once packed into a pipe, will burn evenly, producing plentiful smoke and leaves behind a dry grey ash. It is recommended to first try this strong tobacco in a pipe with a small bowl and to smoke slowly due to the high nicotine content. The reward is creamy, smooth smoke that doesn't bite the tongue, though it does give a mild peppery sensation.
